The Protocol on Integrated Management of Mediterranean Coastal Zones first adopted in 2008 and is a unique legal instrument in the entire international community. It was endorsed by the European Union in 2010 just before the Mediterranean Coast Day, celebrated on 25 September. By ratifying the ICZM Protocol it became part of European law and is binding for all EU Member States.
With main purpose of the protection of the marine environment and the Mediterranean coasts, the Protocol is the key to sustainable development of coastal areas and to ensure that economic development does not have adverse consequences for society and the environment.

The manager of the Aquaterra Christopher Kapopoulos participated in the Standing Environmental Committee (2009-2014) of the Technical Chamber of Greece and the editorial team for the scientific work “Coast Erosion”. The findings of this study were published in the journal TECHNICAL ISSUES, edited by Technical Chamber of Greece and presented in a scientific conference held in Patras in April 2010 with the participation of many Universities, Institutions of the State and interested Citizens.
This work resulted in favor of the adoption of Soft Shore protection Methods. The results were adopted by the Technical Chamber of Greece as the most an appropriate and economic option as suggested by International Institutions and Organizations.
